Christmas tree cakes with Nutella hazelnut spread
Baking around the Christmas tree
Turn a simple yet delicious cake into a festive Christmas memory! And what’s more festive than the sight of a Christmas tree decorated with Nutella® hazelnut spread? Add a little magic to your holiday table!

  • 1 vanilla bean or 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 12 egg whites at room temperature
  • 4 egg yolks, at room temperature
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 1 cup Nutella® hazelnut spread
  • Confectioners’ sugar

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • If you use a vanilla bean, split it lengthwise with a knife and scrape out the seeds.
  • In a large, heatproof bowl, combine egg whites, egg yolks, sugar, salt, and scraped vanilla seeds or vanilla extract.
  • Place bowl over saucepan of simmering water (do not let bottom of bowl touch the water); whisk mixture constantly for about 5 minutes, or until warm to the touch. Remove bowl from simmering saucepan

  • Beat egg mixture lightly for about 10 minutes or until pale yellow, thickened, and tripled in volume.
  • With mixer on low, slowly add flour.

  • Slowly add in butter in a thin, steady stream, mixing gently.

  • Scrape batter evenly onto 2 10” x 15” trimmed baking sheets lined with parchment paper; smooth top of each sheet.
  • Bake for about 15 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center of each cake comes out clean. Let cool completely on cooling racks.

  • Remove cake from pan. Trim off any crisp edges of cake; remove parchment paper.
  • Using 4 star cookie cutters of differing sizes (2” to 4 ½”), cut out 4 stars of each size.
  • Repeat with remaining cake.

  • On the center of the top of each star, spread a dollop of Nutella® hazelnut spread. For each “Christmas tree,” stack 4 stars from largest to smallest, alternating points to resemble tree branches (yields 8 trees).
  • Using a piping bag decorate each point with a dot of Nutella® hazelnut spread, and sprinkle each tree with confectioners’ sugar.

  • Decorate each dot of Nutella® hazelnut spread with small colored candy for “lights,” if desired.
