Sugar

Sugar

Nutella® contains beet sugar and/or refined cane sugar, depending on the geography of its production area. The sugar types we purchase globally can be roughly classified as follows: 75% beet sugar and 25% refined cane sugar.

A history of trust

A history of trust
Ferrero has committed to, and maintained, strong trust-based relations with numerous agricultural cooperatives and sugar producers. We have been collaborating with some suppliers for more than 40 years.
Our procurement and quality teams have put a baseline selection procedure in place for new suppliers in order to support the development of sourcing from other sugar-producing countries. This is a guarantee that the raw material always meets the Group's high quality criteria through its internal auditing system.
Collaborating closely with suppliers enables Ferrero to identify the origins of the sugar contained in Nutella®.

It's all about quality

It's all about quality
We buy only sugar in crystal form with a certain particle size and, when we receive the sugar tanks, we implement strict controls including those that verify the size of the crystals and their purity.
The Ferrero Group ensures that no genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are used in its products, including Nutella®. The sugar sourced is, therefore, 100% non-GMO.

BONSUCRO: Better Sugarcane Initiative

By 2020, Ferrero is committed to obtaining all refined cane sugar from certified sustainable sources. Since 2010, the Group has been a member of "Bonsucro - Better Sugar Cane Initiative", a global non-profit organisation that promotes sustainability of the sugarcane sector through a certification scheme. In 2014, Bonsucro awarded the Ferrero Group the inaugural Leadership Award for its active participation in promoting the development of a sustainable sugarcane sector.
