Contrary to some opportunistic views it is not correct to state that palm oil is detrimental to human health. Ferrero has always paid great attention to both the quality of its products and its raw materials. Palm oil is used essentially for its natural origin; its structure is ideal for confectionery products and spreads and, as a consequence, makes the usage of hydrogenated fats unnecessary. Hydrogenation produces the so-called trans fats which, according to health authorities and the scientific community, are detrimental to human health. Strong criticism against palm oil is nothing new. As early as the Eighties, a massive campaign was launched in the United States, probably orchestrated by local soy oil producers, targeting palm oil because of its presumed hazardousness. However, the scientific community fully belied the campaign, acknowledging palm oil as a natural alternative for several product categories, able to replace hydrogenated oils. As a result, today the consumption of palm oil in the United States is still on the rise. Palm oil has been used in human nutrition for thousands of years. Many scientific studies corroborate the neutrality of palm oil effects on metabolism within a balanced diet.
No. The vegetable oil contained in Nutella® is palm oil, which is naturally extracted from the palm fruit and gives the spread its creamy consistency. For this reason, the product does not have to undergo a hydrogenation process responsible for the formation of trans fats, which are considered particularly unhealthy by both authorities and the scientific community.
Ferrero joined the RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) as early as 2005. This association established a set of principles to foster the production and usage of socially and environmentally-sustainable palm oil. Since December 2013, Nutella produced worldwide physically contains 100% segregated RSPO certified palm oil. Anyway, Ferrero's responsibility does not stop at certification: its commitment continues through its Palm Oil Charter, launched in 2013, to address the leading causes of deforestation and create a balance between the conservation of the environment, community needs and economic benefit and viability.
The Ferrero Palm Oil Charter reflects our decision to strengthen our commitment for sustainable palm oil. It consists of a set of guidelines which aims to eradicate the main causes of deforestation, as well as creating a balance between environmental and social issues on the one hand, and profitability on the other. The 10 goals established by Ferrero in the Palm Oil Charter can be summarised as follows:

1. Supply chain traceability
2. Not clearing High Carbon Stock forests
3. Not using fire to clear land
4. Not planting on peat soils
5. Protection of endangered species
6. Monitoring of greenhouse gas emissions
7. Human rights enforcement, including FPIC – Free Prior Informed Consent
8. Enforcement of the rights of workers
9. No usage of Paraquat (herbicide)
10. Active fight against corruption

All these issues will be reviewed in cooperation with the TFT (ex The Forest Trust) organization.

Our hazelnuts originate mostly from Turkey and Italy. Ferrero is one of the major users of hazelnuts worldwide. For this reason, we intend to implement 100 % traceability of all hazelnuts used by 2020.

The cocoa used in Nutella® originates mainly from the Ivory Coast and Ghana. Ferrero processes the raw cocoa beans to produce cocoa butter and cocoa powder directly in its factories.
In line with its Business Conduct Codex, Ferrero confirms its firm intention of contributing to the eradication of child labour, particularly of its most detrimental forms, as well as of all types of slavery, forced and penal labour. Ferrero's Business Conduct Codex is based on the ILO Convention 138 concerning the minimum age for admission to employment, as well as on the ILO Convention 182 regarding the worst forms of child labour.
