Unlike the baguette that is originally French, there isn't a bread that is originally Taiwanese, but there is one bread that is loved by both children and adults alike - melon bread! This is a bread covered with a layer of sweet paste made from sugar, egg, flour and oil. It's famous for its appearance as it resembles a cantaloupe melon after baking! According to the Taipei bakery association there are two sayings about how melon bread started to appear on the market in Taiwan:
1. Once a Taiwanese baker went to train in Japan to improve his baking skills, he brought Japanese melon bread back to Taiwan and modified its flavour so it became the melon bread now eaten in Taiwan.
2. It originated from Cha Chaan Teng (tea restaurants) in Hong Kong; Taiwanese bakers developed their own way of making it to create the melon bread sold now. Who knows which story is true! But one thing for sure is that melon bread is undoubtedly one of the most popular breads in Taiwan and can always be found in a bakery. It can definitely be said that everyone in Taiwan has eaten melon bread at least once! In recent years, bakeries have started to create different flavours of melon bread. Some bakeries fill it with cream, while some mix cocoa into the sweet layer of crust. So don't be surprised if you see Nutella® added to melon bread the next time you visit Taiwan.
