Whole-grain bread

Dark, dense and close-textured Pumpernickel (Schwarzbrot) is probably one of Germany's most well-known breads and is a typically heavy, slightly sweet rye bread traditionally made with coarsely ground rye ; it is baked for long periods at a low temperature in a covered tin.

With more than 300 different kinds of bread Germany is a country with a globally-renowned bread culture. Germans just love eating rolls and bread made with lots of different grains: whether rye, wheat or spelt. German bread isn't only a side dish but a fully-fledged part of the menu. That explains why Germans also have their very own "Bread Day" every year on May, 5th.
