Why does Nutella® use palm oil in its recipe?
Palm oil is the best option to ensure that the product has the right consistency and structure, and does not interfere with the characteristic flavors of the other ingredients. Most importantly, it does not resort to the hydrogenation process, which produces "trans fats" that have been recognized by the authorities and the scientific world as particularly harmful to health. Many other oils would need to be submitted to hydrogenation to create the consistency necessary for our products.
What is EFSA's (European Food Safety Authority) opinion about palm oil?
According to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)'s recent recommendations, some thermal contaminants (2MCPD, 3MCPD, GE) are present in a wide range of foods and found in larger quantities in vegetable oils subjected to high temperatures during food processing. These contaminants are formed significantly when the oil reaches a temperature of over 200°C. EFSA has recognized that the industry has begun to optimize the processes through lower temperatures and the results are promising, however it hopes to achieve more. The oils and fats consequently have significantly lower levels of contaminants than the standard ones available on the market. This enables the creation of products with minimal levels of contaminants that are completely in line with the parameter defined by EFSA.
Has EFSA ever mentioned Nutella® in its recommendations?
EFSA has neither mentioned Nutella in its recommendations, nor has it ever recommended to stop eating palm oil. Moreover, Nutella has never been removed from the supermarket shelves in any countries.
Is Nutella® safe for consumers?
Yes, Nutella is completely safe to eat. The health and well-being of consumers is an absolute priority for Ferrero. Particularly, claims that Nutella can give you cancer because it contains palm oil are irresponsible and have no scientific evidence.
Are the vegetable oils of Nutella® hydrogenated?
No. The vegetable oil contained in Nutella® is palm oil, which is naturally extracted from the palm fruit and gives the spread its creamy consistency. For this reason, the product does not have to undergo a hydrogenation process responsible for the formation of trans fats, which are considered particularly unhealthy by both authorities and the scientific community.
Does palm oil bear negative effects on health?
Contrary to some views it is not correct to state that palm oil is detrimental to human health. Ferrero has always paid great attention to both the quality of its products and its raw materials. Palm oil is used essentially for its natural origin; its structure is ideal for confectionery products and spreads and, as a consequence, makes the usage of hydrogenated fats unnecessary. Palm oil has been used in human nutrition for thousands of years. Many scientific studies corroborate the neutrality of palm oil effects on metabolism within a balanced diet.
What is exactly the Ferrero Charter on Palm Oil?
The Ferrero Palm Oil Charter reflects our decision to strengthen our commitment for sustainable palm oil. It consists of a set of guidelines which aims to eradicate the main causes of deforestation, as well as creating a balance between environmental and social issues on the one hand, and profitability on the other. The 10 goals established by Ferrero in the Palm Oil Charter can be summarised as follows:
1. Supply chain traceability
2. Not clearing High Carbon Stock forests
3. Not using fire to clear land
4. Not planting on peat soils
5. Protection of endangered species
6. Monitoring of greenhouse gas emissions
7. Human rights enforcement, including FPIC – Free Prior Informed Consent
8. Enforcement of the rights of workers
9. No usage of Paraquat (herbicide)
10. Active fight against corruption
All these issues are reviewed in cooperation with TFT.
Where does your cocoa come from?
The cocoa used in Nutella® originates mainly from the Ivory Coast and Ghana. Ferrero processes the raw cocoa beans to produce cocoa powder directly in its factories.
How does the cocoa used for the production of Nutella® affect the environment?
Ferrero signed the Frameworks for Action to end deforestation and restore forest areas in the cocoa producing countries of Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana. As a part of these Frameworks in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana, the chocolate and cocoa industry will put in place verifiable monitoring systems in order to trace the cocoa from the farms to the factory. The industry will also work with the governments of Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana to ensure an effective national framework for traceability for all traders in the supply chain. At the same time, Ferrero remains dedicated to its ongoing work to map 100% of its cocoa supply chain, as well as to its partnerships to improve the livelihood of farmers and their communities with partners like Save the Children and Fairtrade & Cooperative Union ECOOKIM.
Child labour is widespread in the cocoa plantations of West Africa. What is your position on this issue?
In line with its Business Conduct Code, Ferrero confirms its firm intention of contributing to the eradication of child labour, particularly of its most detrimental forms, as well as of all types of slavery, forced and penal labour. Ferrero's Business Conduct Code is based on the ILO Convention 138 concerning the minimum age for admission to employment, as well as on the ILO Convention 182 regarding the worst forms of child labour. Where do you purchase your hazelnuts?
Our hazelnuts originate mostly from Turkey and Italy. Ferrero is one of the major users of hazelnuts worldwide. For this reason, we intend to implement 100 % traceability of all hazelnuts used by 2020.
Why do you use milk powder in Nutella® ?
The usage of milk powder for chocolate and confectionery products is based on technological purposes. The quality of the skimmed milk powder depends mostly on the quality of the fresh milk it is extracted from. We select this milk according to criteria which are, in some cases, even more stringent than the respective law in force.
