Ferrero and the Charter for ‘no deforestation' palm oil
The certification attained is only the first step towards meeting our employees' and consumers' expectations. In November 2013, we chose to strengthen our commitment to responsibly sourcing palm oil through the Ferrero Palm Oil Charter, in order to further guarantee that the palm fruit oil used in NUTELLA® does not contribute to deforestation, species extinction, high greenhouse gas emissions or human rights violations.
As a further step, on 17th November 2015 we became a member of POIG Palm Oil Innovation Group, an initiative to reform the palm oil industry, building upon the RSPO standards and commitments.
Only sustainable traceable certified palm oil in NUTELLA®
The vegetable oil used in NUTELLA® is sustainable palm oil, 100% certified segregated RSPO. This means that the palm oil used in NUTELLA® is kept separated from conventional palm oil along the whole supply chain. Ferrero's achievement of the RSPO certification has also been praised by Richard Holland, Director of WWF's Market Transformation Initiative
Greenpeace acknowledges Ferrero's work to protect forests
Our actions to tackle deforestation in a grounded and accountable way have been supported by Greenpeace, who considers Ferrero one of the first and more progressive companies in the world in the implementation of a relevant "No Deforestation" policy.
In its 2016 Palm Oil Scorecard Greenpeace identifies Ferrero as one of the two leading companies overall; Ferrero's strengths lie in its strong responsible sourcing of palm oil and industry reform commitment; in addition, among the 14 global consumer goods manufacturers surveyed, they recognize us as the only company able to trace nearly 100% of its palm oil back to the plantations.
Our commitments on hazelnuts
Moving towards a responsible supply chain through traceability
The aim of our Group is to ensure by 2020 that 100% of our suppliers are engaged to produce hazelnuts in respect of:
-National legislation in terms of working conditions (not employ any worker aged below the limit fixed by local legislation).
-Ferrero code of ethics
-Ferrero code of business conduct
In order to reach our objective, Ferrero has established a traceability system back to the farms and audits to the ground run by SCS - a worldwide leading certification firm - to verify compliance through unannounced controls during the harvest months August and September. The traceability system will cover 100% of our supply chain by 2020.
Our commitments on cocoa
Towards a Sustainable Cocoa Supply Chain
Cocoa is mainly grown in developing countries. With the rising demand for cocoa, farmers face many challenges in order to supply the global market and to deal with the complexities of economic, social and environmental issues. Ferrero purchases approximately 120,000 tons of cocoa beans each year. To safeguard the future of the cocoa sector, our priority is not only to ensure a top-quality cocoa supply but also, more importantly, to improve the livelihoods of cocoa farming families in sourcing countries and to augment their agricultural knowhow.
Working towards a common goal
All of the cocoa we source for NUTELLA® will be from Rainforest Alliance CertifiedTM or UTZ certified farms by the end of 2020, so that we can help improve the livelihoods of farmers and their families and conserve natural resources and biodiversity. Moreover all of our cocoa farmers are GPS mapped, allowing the full traceability of our supply-chain at the farm group level, meaning that we can monitor illegal deforestation and ensure we are not buying any cocoa beans from protected areas. Ferrero is also a founding member of the Cocoa and Forest Initiative (CFI), a collaboration between industry and the governments of Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire to end deforestation and restore forest areas.
