Rye-wheat bread

One of the most common breads in Germany is rye-wheat bread (which contains 51-89% rye). Typical examples are the dark brown bread (Kommissbrot) - which is normally baked in loaf pan so it only develops a crust on the top - and home-made Kasseler bread (Kasseler).

With more than 300 different kinds of bread Germany is a country with a globally-renowned bread culture. Germans just love eating rolls and bread made with lots of different grains: whether rye, wheat or spelt. German bread isn't only a side dish but a fully-fledged part of the menu. That explains why Germans also have their very own "Bread Day" every year on May, 5th.
